Leuven ranks among the world’s best startup cities

8 December 2022

A new report by global data platform Dealroom has uncovered the world’s next generation of startup cities. The study identifies 201 tech and startup ecosystems around the globe and classifies them into three categories: trailblazers, science hubs and rising stars. Two of Flanders’ cities rank among the strongest science hubs – with Leuven in 14th place worldwide.

What makes Leuven stand out

In Dealroom’s “The next generation of tech ecosystems” report, Leuven (Flanders) ranks among the world’s top sciences hubs. With a score of 99, the city comes in at number 14, right in front of New York City’s prominent tech and startup landscape.
What’s more, Leuven scores particularly well for certain factors that determine the success of startup ecosystems. For instance, the city ranks:

  • 6th worldwide for early-stage venture capital (VC) per inhabitant;
  • 14th worldwide for university alumni who became founders and raised more than EUR 10 million (share per inhabitant);
  • 16th worldwide for breakout stage venture capital per inhabitant.

Besides being Flanders’ main startup and science hubs, Leuven and Ghent are also home to the region’s leading universities. In fact, the cities’ universities – KU Leuven and UGent – consistently rank among the top 100-150 best universities in the world. The fact that Leuven and Ghent garner success as startup ecosystems, science hubs and university cities alike is no coincidence. In Flanders, close collaboration between the private, academic and public sectors is a top priority, adding to both the entrepreneurial and scientific output of the region’s universities.
