Leuven-based Beaufort shows that beauty has a healing effect

3 November 2017

Time heals all wounds, but apparently, so does beauty. Beaufort, a new Leuven-based company founded by Lotte Martens and Robin Ibens, adds beauty to orthopedic socks and bandages. Last Sunday, the collection was introduced at the BELymph patients day in Brussels.

Lotte Martens presented her second product line – next to the DIY collection she also put on display at the SPACE Showcase. The new line is named Beaufort and banks on the positive effect beauty has in the healing process of lymphedema, among others. Lymphedema is a condition where localised swelling of the arms and/or legs is caused by cancer treatment. Orthopedic socks are a part of the treatment against this condition, "But beauty is the real medicine", Lotte Martens mentions.

“Orthopedic socks and bandages have a bigger mental impact than we think.” Lotte continues. “People really feel like a patient when they wear it. It’s bland, skin-coloured and other people will always ask about their health. The patients are usually more ashamed of visual symptoms rather than the internal ones. At Beaufort, we believe beauty can be healing. So we made orthopedic socks and bandages beautiful, with good effect!”

In a testimonial on Beaufort’s website, Lisa, a patient testing one of the orthopaedic socks, mentions: “My new sock is just like a piece of jewellery. People no longer ask me how I’m feeling in terms of illness, but they notice the beauty on my arm and address it. It’s been quite a while since I’ve enjoyed going outside this much.”
