How the five Flemish universities team up to make a difference

15/02/2021

The Flemish Interuniversity Council (VLIR) published the brochure 'From idea to impact', a realization of the VLIR working group Technology Transfer Offices (TTO) and TTO Flanders.

This anthology bundles 45 success stories of university innovations that provide answers to concrete challenges facing our society. Research at our universities is constantly generating new knowledge, expanding the knowledge base and thus directly contributing to Flanders' innovative strength and economic potential. Our bright minds focus on research that improves society, they lay the foundation for innovative products and services that improve people's daily lives and make them more enjoyable.

This publication presents examples of innovations in seven different areas: Healthcare, Energy, Food & Agriculture, Mobility, Circular Economy, Smart Cities, Culture & Society. It also shows how our universities have joined forces to tackle the COVID-19 crisis. The 45 examples are the result of project-based or structural partnerships between universities and companies, of research commissioned by companies and governments or of a transfer of research results through licenses and spin-offs.

Also discover in this publication how the Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs) of the universities build the bridge between scientists, businesses and governments. The TTOs thus help to strengthen the social impact of the collaboration between researchers and partners. We end with a few key figures showing that our Flemish universities score highly in leading international research and innovation rankings.

The Dutch and English editions of the brochure are available for download. Printed copies of the Dutch edition can be requested from the VLIR-secretariat (administratie@vlir.be).
