Chinese Paper Art is one of the oldest folk arts in China. The Chinese Paper Art may date back to the second century CE, since paper was invented by Cai Lun in the Eastern Han Dynasty in China. Chinese Paper Art consists mainly of two parts: Paper Cutting, Jianzhi 剪纸 in Chinese, and Paper Folding, Zhezhi 折纸 in Chinese. The origination of Chinse Paper Art is closely linked to Chinese festivals and customs, expressing happiness and wishes for the future. Paper cutting refers to handicraft made by cutting paper with scissors to form different patterns and pasting them on the walls, windows, doors and ceilings for celebrating festivals. The goal of paper folding is to transform a flat square sheet of paper into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques. As paper became more affordable, paper cutting and paper folding became two of the most important types of Chinese folk arts. Many people, not only Chinese but also people worldwide, no matter young or old, are fond of it.
