What you will do

Every modern compute system is constrained by peak power availability and average energy efficiency, while many are also limited by thermal effects. As a system power and thermal co-optimization researcher, you will work on these problems by interacting closely with circuit and device experts as well as major foundry, fabless and EDA partners in imec’s eco-system. This is an exciting opportunity to help drive imec’s compute and technology roadmaps and to build the components for systems of the near and far future, as part of the System Technology Co-Optimization (STCO) program.

  • Evaluate the impact of imec’s logic, memory, 3D and advanced packaging roadmaps on future system architecture
  • Analyze power and thermal trends for mobile, server and edge AI systems
  • Identify and analyze opportunities for novel power delivery circuits with emerging devices such as backside power
  • Prototype new power and thermal management techniques in appropriate system simulators and/or emulators
  • Evaluate current capabilities of the EDA tools and work on future nodes, e.g. to evaluate 3D stacked designs etc.
    Interact with universities on development of new micro-architecture concepts that leverage novel technology capabilities such as 3DIC partitioning and non-volatile memory/logic.

Who you are

  • The ideal candidate has a PhD in Electronics or Computer Science, or a masters with at least 3 years relevant industrial experience in SoC power management, microarchitecture, workload characterization or system performance modelling.
  • Some familiarity with published research in thermal/power management techniques and power delivery circuits
  • Experience with synthesis and physical implementation tool flows (Cadence Innovus, or Synopsys ICC) is an advantage
  • You have the ambition to drive future technology, proposing innovative ideas and are willing to work to their circuit and system-level validation.
  • You have a critical mindset, eager to explore new challenges in future and evolve together with changing R&D demands
  • You thrive in an open collaborative working culture that provides an opportunity to impact products and roadmaps with your ideas/prototypes/empirical analysis.
