(Leuven, Lommel, Kortrijk)
To enhance the control of dynamic systems, you will develop state estimators for various machine and vehicle applications.
Flanders Make performs proof of concept studies to show companies new possibilities to improve the intelligence of their (autonomous) machines and vehicles. For the control of dynamical systems, researchers are investigating ways to achieve more accurate, more robust, and more adaptive controls, even when the required sensors are too expensive, or sensing signals are missing. In upcoming research projects the performance and robustness of state estimator algorithms are set forward as a research topic.
System analysis & descriptive model development
As an expert or enthusiast in state estimation, control, physics and/or modelling, you will:
-Work together with a team of engineers of various backgrounds (robotics, vehicle dynamics, power electronics, electric motors, transmission engineers, bearing engineers, electrochemical engineers, etc);
-Take the lead to analyze and model complex non-linear systems for the design of state estimators for cyber-physical systems.
More concretely, for several real-life industry applications (eg. transmissions for trucks, batteries for electrical , localizations systems for automated guided vehicles, robots or boats…),
and for a variety of physical parameters (position, speed, acceleration, distance, temperature, pressure, tension, electrical current, electrical charge, vibration, light, co2, …), you will:
- Analyze and describe the physical relations in your system (MATLAB, Python);
- Choose a design strategy to obtain the estimated states and parameters, and implement kalman filters, moving horizon estimators and other advanced filters (particle filters, extended kalman filters,…), black box models and/or other state of the art technologies;
- Model and develop the state estimator (MATLAB, Simulink, Python);
- Check your theoretical base line model on a test setup, obtaining the sensor data in a relevant test setting and improve your mathematical formula;
- Demonstrate the industrial relevance and document re-usable results;
- Continuously expand your domain knowledge with the state of the art, eg. control algorithms, benchmark algorithms, modeling techniques, digital twin models, etc;
- Trace and present industrial challenges and new research opportunities.
Profile
You have
- A Master’s or PhD degree in Control Engineering or other relevant degree in Engineering (Physical, Mathematical, Industrial, Software, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronical, Automotive,…) ;
- A relevant experience in an industrial or academic context (e.g. R&D project, Master thesis, PhD);
- Strong background in state estimator development and control or sensing strategies;
- Excellent in numerical model selection and development ;
- Any experience in new technology projects for industry is highly valued.
You are
- Passionate about research and new technologies;
- Strong in conceptual and abstract thinking;
- Result oriented, responsible, self-directing;
- A good communicator;
- Proficient in English;
- Keen to take initiative;
- Eager to learn.
