We plan to hire two postdoctoral researchers on the topic of natural language understanding at the Department of Computer Science at KU Leuven, Belgium. Potential topics of interest are the learning of representations of language in a perceptual context, continual learning, compositional generalization, learning by analogy, the role of imagination and anticipation in language understanding, and the role of memory in commonsense reasoning and in discourse understanding.

The European Lab for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) promotes basic research in machine learning and modern AI, and involves the very best European academics ( KU Leuven ranks among the top 50 universities in THE World University Rankings 2021.


  • Perform fundamental research in natural language understanding and machine learning.
  • Carry out some teaching duties, which may include lectures, the organization of student seminars, and the supervision of bachelor and master theses.


  • The successful candidate has (or are near completion of) a PhD in Computer Science (or a related field).
  • He or she has excellent knowledge of the fundamental principles, algorithms and methods of machine learning and in particular of learning representations.
  • He or she has an outstanding track record of publications in relevant international peer-reviewed A ranked conferences and in journals with high impact factor in the fields of natural language processing and machine learning.
