Central in this project is the question how individuals respond to stigma, specifically how stigma affects self-regulation, motivation, and performance. Women are still strongly underrepresented in various fields (e.g., technology, the police force) and in higher positions in society, while men continue to be underrepresented in communal roles, including health care, elementary education, and in domestic and care roles at home.

The research themes at CSCP include socio-cultural processes of social identity, social inequality, intergroup relations, emotion, motivation and regulatory processes, and diversity in school and work organizations. Much of the research focuses on conditions that promote well-being, motivation and achievement of negatively stereotyped groups. The center includes approx. 17 post docs and Ph.D. students. The Center has an excellent international reputation and extensive research collaborations with social and cultural psychology groups nationally and abroad. The center provides excellent research facilities, including a state-of-the-art psycho-physiological lab.

Project

Central in this project is the question how individuals respond to stigma, specifically how stigma affects self-regulation, motivation, and performance. Women are still strongly underrepresented in various fields (e.g., technology, the police force) and in higher positions in society, while men continue to be underrepresented in communal roles, including health care, elementary education, and in domestic and care roles at home. Ethnic and religious minorities, LGBTQ+ people, low SES people, and people with physicalor mental disabilities face stigma in many areas of their day-to-day lives. The project integrates research on stigma and social identity with work on self-regulation to understand processes of central relevance to people facing prejudice and discrimination. The specific project will focus on instability of self-knowledge and self-esteem, and uncertainty about how one is evaluated in the face of prejudice and discrimination. Key in the project is a consideration of individuals not as passive recipients of negative attitudes, stereotypes, and behaviors, but as active individuals pursuing multiple goals and using various strategies to maintain well-being, motivation and performance. The project will develop research using a combination of field and experimental methods, that can also include psycho-physiological measures. The research is funded by the Science Foundation of Flanders-Belgium (FWO, Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek - Vlaanderen).

Profile

Requirements:

  • Degree in Social sciences (a master’s degree in social (and/or organizational) psychology is preferred).
  • Interest and enthusiasm for conducting research on identity, stigma, social inequality, intergroup relations, and self-regulation.
  • Good research skills (experimental, correlational; experience with psycho-physiological techniques is an asset).
  • Good writing skills in English (and Dutch is an asset).
  • Good presentation skills.
Offer

Tasks:

  • Development and execution of the proposed research project.
  • Present results at national and international conferences.
  • Report results in international refereed journals, leading to a dissertation.
  • Follow specialized courses through the research school.
  • Provide teaching assistance at undergraduate level and assist in the supervision of undergraduate students (maximum 10-15%).


Project-leader is Prof. Colette Van Laar. The candidate will work within the Center for Social and Cultural Psychology, and with Jenny Veldman. Funding is available for 4 years. The appointment is initially for the duration of 1 year (starting October 2019) and will be extended given satisfactory achievements. Salaries are more than competitive with international standards.
