HIVA - Research Institute for Work and Society - is a multidisciplinary research institute of KU Leuven. We are a team of about 70 employees. Bringing different disciplines together under one roof and specialising in policy-oriented research on work and society gives HIVA a unique position within KU Leuven and beyond. The research group 'Social and Economic Policy & Social Integration' focuses on the economic and social emancipation and social protection of the employee group and the most vulnerable in society from a policy- and practice-oriented perspective. Key themes include poverty, housing, migration and care; organisation, financing and quality of services for vulnerable groups; and social protection at the micro, meso and macro level.

Responsibilities

For the research group 'Social and Economic Policy & Social Integration' we are looking for a research manager in the field of Belgian and European social inclusion policy. Several projects are currently running that investigate the effectiveness of social inclusion strategies based on conceptual frameworks such as social investment, basic social rights and the capabilities approach. Social inclusion is investigated from a multidimensional and multidisciplinary perspective. Our research combines advanced statistical models with participatory qualitative methods. It aims to underpin Flemish, Belgian and European social policies.As a research manager, you will further develop this social inclusion research at HIVA by attracting, conducting, guiding and monitoring it. You will lead an interdisciplinary team of researchers and contribute to the networking with national and international stakeholders.

Profile
  • You have a PhD in political, social or economic sciences (or equivalent).
  • You have at least four years of relevant experience with Flemish, Belgian and European social policy.
  • You have excellent methodological (especially statistical) skills and thorough knowledge of various statistical software packages: Stata, SAS, R, SPSS, ...
  • You are familiar with the theme of social inclusion. You are able to identify innovative research questions in this domain and put them on the research agenda.
  • You are creative in conceptualising, developing and successfully completing research projects in a timely manner. You are able to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • You have the necessary social and leadership skills to coach a small research team, collaborate in scientific networks and liaise with government agencies.
  • You are entrepreneurial, sufficiently flexible to meet deadlines and you are not afraid of multi-tasking (combining different projects).
  • You have commercial feeling for the acquisition of assignments and research funding. You think customer-oriented. You have good coaching and management skills for the efficient implementation of projects.
  • You have a reasonable knowledge of Dutch and/or French. You have excellent written and oral skills in English (most research reports must be submitted in English). You have excellent presentation skills.
