At the Power Electronics Group of the Department of Electrical Engineering ESAT / ELECTA located at EnergyVille, several PhD students and post-docs are working on modeling and applications of power electronics. We currently have a PhD position available.

Their researchers provide expertise to industry and governments in the field of intelligent energy systems for a sustainable urban environment - such as smart grids and advanced heating networks.

The aim of this project is to address the implications of increasing the power density with the purpose of minimizing the volume and weight of power converters and increasing the performance of the system.

The proposed PhD position will focus on power converters of less than 10kW with applications in solar, smart grids, and electric mobility. The PhD candidate will be part of collaborative projects with companies, academic discussions,guidance of master students, teaching assistance, funded-project applications,among other activities.

The PhD candidate can start from existing power converter models and dedicated expertise available in the research group and will collaborate with the other research group members.


We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and communicative researcher with a Master of Science Degree in Engineering or a related field. The applicant should have obtained excellent study results.

 The candidate should have a strong interest in energy, with knowledge in power electronics, modeling, design of power converters, control, and experience with experimental setups. Experience with Matlab/Simulink, LTSpice, PSIM is highlyvaluated. Applicants should also have good English communication skills. Dutch proficiency is not required; however, its study is encouraged during the PhD program.

 Note: In case of being selected, if the candidate got the Master’s Degree from a University outside of the EU, English Proficiency certificate(TOEFL or IELTS) and English translation and apostille of the diploma and official transcripts are required for the admission.


This research is to be performed within the framework of EnergyVille in the city of Genk. If the selected candidate requires to take courses, these will be given in the city of Leuven or in the Technology Campus in Diepenbeek.
