The Leuven Institute for Research on Information Systems (LIRIS) coordinates research in the area of information technology and management in organizations. This research embodies: fundamental issues of business information and knowledge in organizations, applied research, and research on the use and implications of digital information throughout society.

One of the research topics is knowledge-based and data-based artificial intelligence. While information technology has already dramatically changed the business world, AI (‘think and act like a human’) is bound to do so even more. This project deals with the opportunities and challenges of decision and knowledge automation and the implications for digital business transformation.

We are looking for a full-time PhD researcher (m/f) for scientific research (funding up to 4 years) which should lead to a PhD-degree. The research will be conducted under guidance of Prof. Jan Vanthienen.
This research will investigate the modeling and automation of routine business decisions, knowledge, contracts, advice and support, and how this can impact and transform business (including government and nonprofit organizations).
You are expected to participate in seminars and conferences, be internationally mobile and to enroll in the PhD program of the Faculty of Economics and Business. The candidate can be asked to give guidance to students, be involved in teaching activities and to supervise exams.
You will find a dynamic and pleasant working environment, in a group that is actively involved in scientific research at the highest international level, in close cooperation with business practice.


Candidates should have a very strong interest in information systems and preferably have a background in Business Engineering, Business & Information Systems Engineering, Computer Science or AI. Programming skills are an advantage as well as knowledge of Dutch.
Excellent marks, with at least an average yearly result of "distinction" during the university education is required, as is a very good knowledge of written and spoken English.


We offer an employment as full-time doctoral scholar as from now for 1 year, renewable till max. 4 years after positive evaluation. The tentative starting date is September 1, 2018, depending on the availability of the candidate.
