The research will be carried out at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the KU Leuven. The research topic is a collaboration between the Centre for Industrial Management (CIB) and the Robotics Research Group, both units within this department.


The PhD candidate will be involved in the Paradigms 4.0 project, a multidisciplinary project, including researchers from social science, economy and engineering (= this position). The project develops a scientific framework, answering critical questions concerning the impact of Industry 4.0 on organizations, workplaces, employment relations, performance and workers.

PhD position at Department of Mechanical Engineering:

We are looking for PhD researcher to work on defining a framework, going beyond the current standards in Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) literature, to identify and manage key characteristics of a job environment deploying Industry 4.0 technology (e.g., cobots, exoskeletons, virtual reality/augmented reality tools). Also, lessons learned from risk assessment and risk mitigation in Industry 4.0 work settings will need to be incorporated in this framework in order to

  • foster a more active involvement of human-operators and teams in risk assessment, prevention and management, and
  • contribute to the acquisition of health, productive and safety knowledge for individual operators, teams and the organization as a whole.

A strong interest in the human factor in industrial setting is required, as well as a technical background in /affinity with a relevant field (engineering, informatics…).

Language skills: the candidate must have a good knowledge (oral and written) of both English and Dutch. (De kandidaat moet vlot kunnen communiceren in het Nederlands met het oog op industrieel veldwerk).

Eligible degrees: Master of Science in engineering science (burgerlijk ingenieur), Master of Science in business engineering (handelsingenieur), Master of Science in artificial intelligence.


A fully funded PhD scholarship for one year, renewable up to four years in case of positive evaluation.
