Postdoctoral Researcher Atomic Layer Deposition for Memory Technologies

You will gain fundamental understanding of ALD growth mechanisms, needed to develop materials for application in next generation memory devices.

What you will do

Imec investigates memory concepts with increased memory density to enable fast, low temperature and powerful storage solutions for next generation smart phones, tablets, smart TVs, and other pioneering technologies. These include DRAM devices for high-speed access, NAND flash memory devices for storage of large amounts of data, and the emerging Storage Class Memories (SCM) for massive data access in short time. Each technology requires specific materials. Moreover, the deposition of these materials is challenging due to the high aspect ratios in advanced 3D architectures. Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) is a promising technique in this respect, as it allows for conformal deposition of a wide range of materials. The aim of this post-doc project is to generate fundamental insights into the growth mechanisms of ALD, focusing on materials that are relevant for various memory applications. Germanium chalcogenides are promising materials for SCM, as phase-change-based memory material and as selector material. However, complex ternary and even quaternary compounds are needed to improve the stability and boost the memory cell performance. For NAND flash on the other hand, we will explore alternative channel materials with high carrier mobility such as (In)GaAs. Fundamental understanding of the ALD growth mechanisms and the impact of precursors will be key to control the composition and properties of these complex materials, and as such optimize the memory device performance.

The Thin Films group of imec is looking for a self-motivated professional with deposition (ALD or CVD) and material background, who can work in a cross-functional team of people dedicated to the development and integration of memory-oriented materials.

  • You will study the chemical and physical growth mechanisms during ALD of memory materials on various surfaces and topographies.
  • You will use the insight to optimize the physical and electrical properties of the layers, towards requirements for application in memory devices.
  • You will combine direct hands-on processing on Imec’s advanced industrial 300mm tool set with a project-like way of working.
  • As a project owner, you will ensure the timely execution of the research and development project.
  • You will work together with the other R&D process, integration, and device groups to enable the next generation memory materials.
  • You will build-up a close relationship with equipment suppliers to keep up to date of novel technologies related to the deposition and characterization of memory materials.

Who you are

  • You have a PhD degree in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or Engineering.
  • You have professional experience with chemical vapor or atomic layer deposition and physical characterization of thin films.
  • Experience with materials specifically for memory technologies is an asset.
  • You are flexible in working for different memory technologies in parallel.
  • You work according to a well-structured methodology and can define clear goals.

This postdoctoral position is funded by imec through KU Leuven. Because of the specific financing statute which targets international mobility for postdocs, only candidates who did not stay or work/study in Belgium for more than 24 months in the past 3 years can be considered for the position (short stays such as holiday, participation in conferences, etc. are not taken into account).
