Our core focus is the control and processing part of smart electricity grids. Distributed control and machine learning are two major keywords. Within the context of several research projects, we are looking for a postdoctoral researcher, that is able to move the state-of-art forward, and can help to coordinate these.

KU Leuven ESAT-Electa is the research unit on electrical energy and smart grids at the Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT) of the University of Leuven. It received the 'excellent' mark during the last audit. The research unit has 6 professors, 8 postdocs, 12 technical and administrative staff and 50+ PhD students, and is active in many projects. It is a co-founder of EnergyVille. EnergyVille is a knowledge centre, focused on sustainable energy and intelligent energy systems. It combines the strengths and expertise of its partners, KU Leuven, VITO and imec with the aim of reaching the top 5 in innovative energy research in Europe. Since 2016 EnergyVille has great research infrastructure (incl a smart grids lab) in Genk, where your main work location is.

Responsibilities

The smart grid research group has more than 10 years of experience in control and optimisation of flexibility management and demand response. Multi-objective optimisation, uncertainty and scalability management, and multi-vector energy systems are keywords in our research roadmap, which combines model-based and data-driven approaches.
To strengthen our team, we are looking for a data scientist which loves machine learning, but also knows what smart energy systems are about.

Profile

We are looking for an enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher with a PhD degree in Engineering Science (electrical engineering, energy science, computer engineering...) or alike and with a strong interest in smart energy systems and machine learning and with a solid engineering background. 

The candidate should have distinguished him/herself during the PhD (excellent publications) and shall wish to continue to do very good research, while keeping an eye on industrial evolutions in the context of several ongoing projects.

The candidate shall be a citizen of a EU member state or an EEA country.

Offer

The researcher will be a KU Leuven employee, and also work as part of EnergyVille's research team in Genk. 

She/He gets a contract as postdoctoral researcher (scale 44, see https://www.kuleuven.be/personeel/jobsite/en/academic-staff/academic-staff-research-education-information).

The position is for 3 years, starting with a one-year contract.
