In recent years, data has actually become the life-giving force of the developing innovations in smart cities around the world. Over the last 20 years, it has had a phenomenal impact on different industries including transport, retail, and utility. A lot of cities are taking data benefits to gain a better insight into city operations. So does Leuven. Together with Stad Leuven en Leuven Value Network, Leuven MindGate therefore organizes the online event 'Is Data the Holy Grail for Smart Cities?'.

The Leuven MindGate project was founded to enhance the collaboration between all the innovative partners in the Leuven region. One of the projects on which Leuven MindGate focuses, is to use smart technologies for sustainable, healthy living and moving in and around the city. Numerous Leuven MindGate members are currently cooperating in order to work out advanced ideas around smart city technology.

Last year, Leuven Value Network organized an event putting the smart city experience in Leuven in the spotlight. Connecting more than 200 attendees with various aspects of smart cities, and putting it into practice on a local scale, the event was called a success. Next to that, the city of Leuven is working hard to make Leuven a smart city. Data will play an important role in future policy. After all, the city has a wealth of data at its disposal. On the one hand, Leuven wants to involve its citizens in the collection of data and, on the other hand, it wants to open up available data to the general public.

The award of ‘European Capital of Innovation’, which Leuven recently received, shows that the Leuven MindGate region is on the way forward. The prestigious award from the European Commission rewards the city that makes the best use of innovation to improve the quality of life of its inhabitants. The European Commission praised the way in which Leuven sets up inspiring governance models in which residents, companies, organizations and knowledge institutions are committed to help shape the future, and eventually become… a smart city in all possible meanings.
