Cooperation between Leuven and Wuxi officialised

24 November 2017

This week, a delegation from the city of Wuxi, China, visited Leuven to officialise the cooperation between the two cities after a Leuven MindGate delegation visited them in 2016.

Wuxi, near Shanghai, is a city of 6,5 million inhabitants in one of China's most thriving regions. "Closing an agreement with this metropolis in one of the strongest economies in the world, offers a plethora of possibilities", Mohamed Ridouani, Deputy mayor of Leuven, mentions. "Our strengths - education and ecology - are challenges Wuxi faces. On top of that, we both aim to be a smart city."

The Chinese delegation visited knowledge institutions such as KU Leuven, imec and venture capital partner Capricorn Venture Partners, who closed an agreement with several Chinese companies during last year's mission in China. By officialising the cooperation between both cities, more of these agreements are sure to follow.

This cooperation shows Leuven MindGate's ambition to put the region of Leuven on the map internationally; a process which is starting to pay its dividends, since New Delhi also closed an agreement earlier this year.
