Online platform Popstart launched to help combat vacancies in shop-premises
To counter the increasing demand for affordable space for starters, the city of Leuven launched Popstart, an online platform designed to connect starters and the shop-premises' owners. The city itself shows the right example by sub-letting two vacant spaces below the market price.

Leuven offers an interesting ecosystem for startups and growing companies in the creative industries, with a focus on communication, new media, music and audiovisual companies. The rise of this bottom-up cluster is due to the relatively recent decision (10-15 years) of a few pioneering entrepreneurs to settle in the area around the Vaartkom.
But equally important is the rather impressive – and recent - cultural infrastructure, like Museum M, Depot, OPEK or STUK. This created a positive dynamic and growth for the overall economy in Leuven, since creative and knowledge companies attach great importance to a lively, bustling city.
Nowadays, the creative cluster in Leuven stands out internationally, due to innovative marketing campaigns and television productions. Productions from Hotel Hungaria (Dagelijkse Kost, Groenland, ...) Bonka Circus (Iedereen Duivel) or De Chinezen (Iedereen Beroemd, Ten Oorlog ...) led to an entirely new approach to human interest.
Indeed, Leuven’s creativity got noticed beyond Belgium’s borders, with numerous international awards at the festivals of Cannes and Montreux. Eg: Boondoggle’s ‘The Devil Challenges (Belgian Football Association) or Make Lemonade’s ‘Nordic Week (Canvas)’. Meanwhile, Selah Sue’s and Milow’s music meets unprecedented international commercial and critical success.
Larger companies in this cluster are Boondoggle, Bonka Circus, BUUR, Hotel Hungaria, De Chinezen, Make Lemonade, Absoluut and Nelson Inspires ...
